Passionate about people

“We could have been anything that we wanted to be, and it’s not too late to change”

Do you remember this song from the end of Bugsy Malone. I always  get a buzz when I watch this scene. The realisation that we can be the best at what we do. And the song goes on to say “That decision was ours”

I remember well my days in the outdoor  pursuits centre  watching some youngsters from a private boy’s school negotiating the high ropes course. And it was high, and scary from my perspective; I don’t do heights. One brave eleven year old boy was bravely attempting the final section over the tyres, with gritted teeth and tears running down his cheek as I heard his head teacher shouting at him, “Stop the crying Jones, your useless”. That head teacher could have been better. Jones deserved praise and encouragement. I don’t know what became of either of these people but I know that young Jones had the potential to achieve and I believe that despite the negativity thrown at him he would overcome all obstacles and continue his life with that same determination I witnessed that day.

For many people self esteem takes a battering from family, teachers, colleagues and sometimes  simply from trying and failing. I did read somewhere that the only time we fail is the last time we try.

So whether your task is to deliver a presentation, find a new job, start a new business, my encouragement is 'give it a go'.  I do believe we build confidence and self esteem by having a go, and whether we win or lose we learn from the experience and keep moving on.  It's good to find friends and mentors who will be nourishing and encouraging and to avoid the negative wizards, who themselves need an excuse for their failures.

Passionate about people?  So am I.  Always happy to talk, help or encourage.  Do get in touch.
